“The sullen servant who does shoddy work will be held responsible. Being Christian doesn’t cover up bad work.” (Colossians 3:25 – Message Bible)

We looked at this verse yesterday in church.

I was thinking about some of the guys I have worked with in the past who talked a lot about their Christianity, but simply did not pull their weight at work. It was always sad because their bad attitude, or simple laziness, reflected so poorly on their faith. I think the people in our lives should know that we are believers, and I have no problem with talking to coworkers about Christ. But a good attitude on the job and doing quality work, coupled with an openness about our faith really creates a great witness.

I was also thinking about the fact that the reverse of this verse is also true. Just being a hard working individual, or popular with the guys at the job, does not make up for having a lousy spiritual life. Guys, your wife needs you to be a man of faith, and a man who openly loves God. Your kids need to see Dad read his Bible and pray. They need to see you forgive, and live generously. Your family needs to know that you are a person who genuinely seeks the Lord. If your priorities are work, then recreation, hanging with your buddies, then family, and somewhere down the line God and church. Don’t be surprised when your sons follow suit.
